BMHS Honors and Remembers Heroes on 80th Anniversary of D-Day

\u201cOld soldiers never die; they just make you smile.\u201d John Santillo, a resilient World War II D-Day survivor, dedicated his time post-war to educate the youth and students at BMHS about his experience along with the acts of valor of those who fought alongside him. Mr. Santillo loved to share his story with anyone who would listen. For the 75th anniversary of D-Day, 5 years ago, world history teacher Miss Annmarie Tarnowski, with the students at BMHS raised money through bake sales to fund Mr. Santillo\u2019s return to France when he was ninety-seven years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"On the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, Miss Tarnowski organized a premiere event for the documentary film, \u201cOh Johnny! A True Tale of War, Peace, And Love\u201d chronicling Mr. Santillo’s extraordinary journey from his time in war to his return to France. He was an optimistic and charismatic character that was memorable to anyone who crossed his path. Joined by Film Director Lawrence Schwartz and Editor Jack Diehl, Miss Tarnowski led an evening dedicated to honoring the memory of this remarkable man. Lawrence Schwartz noted that his energy was much higher than one would assume for his age, and he had an indomitable spirit. Sadly, he passed in 2020, but his energy still carries through anyone who knew him and through the film. \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

As ROTC proudly presented the colors and led the pledge of allegiance, a multitude of students and families gathered to enjoy this inspirational, heartfelt tribute. Thank you to Key Club members for helping set up this event and to every student who attended.<\/span><\/p>\n
