This is accomplished by providing additional opportunities for these children to acquire and practice skills in the areas of Literacy and Mathematics.<\/p>\n

PROGRAM DESIGN: The basic skills teachers collaborate with the classroom teachers, supporting those children needing extra help. They reinforce classroom instruction through the use of additional grade level materials and teaching techniques.<\/p>\n

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility for the Basic Skills Improvement Program is determined by using a variety of criteria. Improving Fine Motor Skills<\/p>\n

Does your child suffer from the following?<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Fatigue and\/or pain when writing<\/li>\n
  2. Awkward pencil grip<\/li>\n
  3. Difficulty using scissors<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If your child has experienced these or other problems, there are\u00a0some exercises\/activities that\u00a0can possibly\u00a0help promote\u00a0and improve fine motor development and hand grasp, some of the\u00a0skills required\u00a0for writing and cutting.
    \nMuscle Tone and Joint Stability<\/em>— Coordination, attention and focus can perhaps be developed\/enhanced by developing muscle tone and joint stability in the trunk,shoulders,wrist and hands. A sense of calmness may also be attained by performing some of the heavy work and weight bearing activities\u00a0listed\u00a0\u00a0below:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Push ups (on floor, against the wall) Chair pushups, pull ups, climbing activities on playground equipment.<\/li>\n
    2. Wheel barrow walking, animal walks\u00a0(on hands and knees)<\/li>\n
    3. Weight bearing on\u00a0forearm while reading, watching TV. etc..<\/li>\n
    4. Helping with the laundry basket,\u00a0carrying groceries, throwing out the trash.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Arm and Hand Muscles<\/em>–Skilled movement needed for fine motor, manipulative ability as well as graphomotor success can perhaps be developed\/enhanced through various exercises as well.\u00a0Development of\u00a0strong arm and hand muscles are essential for these tasks. Examples of activities include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Stringing\/lacing activities<\/li>\n
      2. working with clay, silly putty or play dough.<\/li>\n
      3. Snapping fingers,tops,games with coins,pegs,chips.<\/li>\n
      4. Jacks, pick up sticks, marbles<\/li>\n
      5. Using tongs,chopsticks or tweezers to\u00a0pick\u00a0up small items.<\/li>\n
      6. Spray\/squirt bottles\/toys<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Working in the vertical position can also assist with strengthening and\u00a0facilitating\u00a0increased wrist extension. Activities may include:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Working on a chalkboard, drawing\/painting on an easel.<\/li>\n
        2. Working on a slant board esp. during writing tasks<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \nBeads, Lacing cards, cards, MagnaDoodle, LiteBrite, Battleship, puzzles(also addresses visual perceptual skills and eye hand coordination)
          \nThese are only a few suggestions and are activities that can benefit All students.<\/p>\n
