It’s never easy to say good-bye to a enjoyable summer, but the teachers at Brick Memorial High School know the best way to start a September!  For the first three days of the month, teachers and staff of BMHS were led by the administration to tackle various topics such as “challenging questions in the classroom,” “Social Emotional Learning strategies,” and “looking at the whole student.”

Teachers were inspired with a visit from our district teacher of the year, Joann Betancourt, who spoke beautifully about avoiding judgments in the classroom and understanding that every child learns differently.  It’s through these ideas that teachers will be able to reach students, especially those who may be nervous about returning to the classroom after last year.

Teachers were given words of wisdom from our superintendent, Dr. Thomas Farrell, who spoke to them about the importance of our district motto: “Student Centered. Teacher Led.”  It’s through this motto that the district will focus their efforts in creating classroom practices that not only teach students math, reading, writing, science, history, etc., but gives them the tools to learn on their own.  Where will the student be after Brick Memorial?  We will focus our efforts on building a learner, prepared for the world in front of them.

In the midst of preparing classrooms, teachers attended department meetings, Professional Learning Committees, and Best Practice Demonstrations.  Through these meetings, which promoted the idea of students being the main focus of our school, teachers are now ready to meet and enlighten their students on September 8th.

On Friday, the teachers were greeted with a beautiful breakfast supplied by the administration and ended their day with raffle gifts provided by the Student Government Association.

Mustangs, some of you have never stepped foot in our building; some of you have not been here for quite a while; some of you feel like this is your home.  No matter where you are on that spectrum, know that the faculty, staff, and administration are excited to see you, excited to welcome you, excited to bring you into our community!  Once a Mustang, Always a Mustang!
