On February 11, LRMS went red for cardiovascular disease.
“Ok, but what is cardiovascular disease?” you may ask.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women. It is a heart disease and can be fatal. The color red represents the heart. There are many different types of cardiovascular disease.
The first one is known as Coronary Artery Disease. This disease is mainly caused by the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries. The blood flow to the heart is restricted by plaque. This disease can be fatal, unfortunately.
Then there is Cerebrovascular Disease. Certain conditions affect blood flow to the brain, causing strokes. There are many more.
Go Red Day was sponsored by the American Heart Association and coordinated by Ms. Prince. The staff is educated on exercises and habits to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as early symptoms, and to get help as soon as possible. This is done in honor of Women’s History Month.
Here are some things to reduce your chance of getting cardiovascular disease:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Moderate exercise (Around 150+ minutes a week)
- A nutrient-rich diet low in saturated fats and sodium
- Regularly check your blood pressure with your doctor
LRMS observed Go Red Day by wearing jeans and RED and donating funds to the American Heart Association. About $320 was raised to donate towards research. Go Red!
